Who Needs to File an Income Tax Return in Pakistan?

Filing is not only for people who pay tax. Here is how to tell whether a return is required for you, even if your income is modest.
Income is not the only trigger
Most people assume a return is only for those whose income crosses the taxable limit. In practice, the law also asks certain people to file based on what they own or spend, such as property, vehicles or high utility bills.
That means a salaried person with a modest income may still be required to file. The thresholds are set by each year's Finance Act, so always check the current rules before assuming you are exempt.
Common groups who should file
Salaried individuals above the taxable income limit, business owners, freelancers earning from local or foreign clients, landlords earning rental income, and people who earn profit on savings or investments should all review their position.
Even if you are not required to file, submitting a return can still be useful. It creates a clean record of your income and assets, and it helps when you apply for a loan, a visa or a business account.
What to do if you are unsure
Start by adding up your income for the tax year from every source: salary, business, rent, profit and any foreign income. Then compare it with the current limit published by the FBR. If you are close to the limit or have significant assets, filing is the safer choice.
