Filer vs Non-Filer: What Actually Changes for You

Being on the Active Taxpayer List affects how much tax is withheld on everyday transactions. Here is why it matters beyond the annual return.
The Active Taxpayer List
After you file your return on time, your name appears on the Active Taxpayer List maintained by the FBR. This status is what banks, registration offices and other withholding agents check when they deduct tax from you.
Higher withholding for non-filers
Many transactions carry a withholding tax, including bank transactions, vehicle registration and property purchases. The rates for people who are not on the list are usually higher than for those who are, and some transactions face extra restrictions.
Over a year, that difference can easily exceed the effort of filing a return. Exact rates change with each budget, so check the current schedule on the FBR website.
Staying on the list
File your return before the deadline each year. If a deadline is extended, the extended date is the one that counts, but do not rely on extensions. Filing early also leaves time to fix any mistakes.
