Common Tax Filing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Arfa · 15 August 2026 · 5 min read
Most notices come from small, avoidable errors. Check these points before you hit submit.
Leaving out income
Side income, rent, profit on savings and foreign remittances are often forgotten. The tax authority can see bank profit and many withholding deductions, so missing items are easy to spot.
Mismatched withholding figures
The tax deducted you declare should match what employers, banks and other agents have reported. Compare your records with your withholding statements before you enter the amounts.
Rushing at the deadline
The portal is busiest in the last few days before the deadline, and slow pages lead to rushed entries. Start early, save your progress as you go, and review the summary page carefully before submitting.
Not keeping a copy
After submission, download the return and the acknowledgement and store them with your supporting documents. You will need them next year for comparison and in case of any query.
